OMG.... Thanksgiving is almost here! And have I got a list of my favorite things about TG that I must share with yall:

NO SCHOOL: Amazing. I am still as amused with time off school as I was when I was a little kid. You get to sleep in, sit around in your boxers all day, play video games, have sleepovers with your friends... I still do all this.

Food: Favorite foor on TG is stuffing. No question. I get stuffing, mashed potatoes, and turkey, and leave a circle in the middle for the best BBQ in the land: Sweet Baby Rays. Now I know the turkey connoisseurs will be upset that I use BBQ as appose to gravy or nothing at all, but Sweet Baby brings these three Thanksgiving Staples together like you wouldnt believe. And you better believe I come equipped with two bottles of SBR on Thanksgiving day.

Family: There is nothing than to be with the family over break. I am pretty lucky this year to have my brother flying in from Houston (unfortunately his wife and dog, hoss, will not be able to join him... they will be missed). And my other brother will be able to get off work this year!!! But we will get to see both my mom and dads side of the family which will be fantastic. It's weird how my brothers and I used to dread these trips and now we cannot wait to be with family. I guess that is what growing up does to you. Makes you realize you only have a limited amount of time with the people you care about.

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys their break. Hopefully you all can spend it with the people you love and/or get a good meal. It will be over in no time and it's right back to school and then the ever horrifying finals will sneak up!

Hey Everyone,

Everyone in their Kelley School of Business Career will participate in a group project. It may not be by choice, but they will all the same. Some people really dread group projects, rightfully so: Group projects can be a real struggle when you have 4 people with different schedules, ideas, and goals. Some have families, some have ideas that are very different (typically me). and some desire grades that others dont. For all the negatives associated with group projects, there are more positives:

3,4,5, heads are better than one: As long as you dont participate in the dreaded "Group Think", you really are smarter when working with others than you are by yourself. It's amazing what others know. And when you are able to bounce your ideas off of different people, you typically seem a lot smarter.

Pulling Your Weight: When a group is well organized and roles are defined, you can really feel it. Each person desires to live up to the standards set for them by their fellow group members. And when each group member lives up to what is expected of them, it is a great feeling and usually results in a good grade.

Friends: Group projects are good for making friends. It is hard to meet people at school. Each person has their own agenda and usually keeps to themselves. But when you work in a group, you can easily meet new people that you may not have talked to.

So, next time you are assigned a gorup, dont dread it. It could turn out for the best..

I have my I-Core classes Monday and Wednesday nights. Operations is on Wednesdays. Today was actually the final lecture that we will have all semester. And for me, since I am an Accounting and Finance major, it was the final operations and supply chain management lecture of my career.

In Operations, we are not having class next Wednesday, we have presentations the Wednesday after that, and then we have the final the Wednesday after that. It is such a relief to finish with a class early. This just allows for one more thing to not have to prepare for. Now that being said, our group has not started with our presentation yet and we still have a final left. But in a class that is hard for you to get your head wrapped around, it is always nice to finish early.

        11/18/2009
Today I am thankful for my job. Today, I secretly celebrated my 6-month PERF anniversary. Not only is my job safe, I worked overtime today. I also qualified for tuition reimbursement today, which means that next semester's tuition will be reimbursed by my employer. Within the next few days, I will be enrolling in health benefits for next year. So I have to admit, today I am thankful for my job.

"For college grads lucky enough to get work this year, low wages are likely to haunt them for a decade or more"

As I pondered what to share with my readers tonight, I stumbled across an article that my Dad had emailed me the week of graduation. The statistic floating around at the time was that only one in five college graduates landed a job. The WSJ article was titled "The Curse of the Class of 2009".

The less-than-optimistic article cites several cases of graduates being forced to change career paths, settle for lower paying jobs and move back in with their parents to save money. As an added bonus, "Economic research shows that the consequences of graduating in a
downturn are long-lasting. They include lower earnings, a slower climb
up the occupational ladder and a widening gap between the least- and
most-successful grads." Interestingly enough, none of the graduates mentioned graduated with a business degree.

The good news: it remains true that a degree in a bad economy is still better than no degree in any economy. The article went on to say "College graduates remain better off than those with only high-school
diplomas, in good times and bad. The unemployment rate in April among
four-year college graduates between 20 and 24 years old was 6.1%; among
those the same age with only high-school diplomas, it was 19.6%." However, even with a college degree, there are no guarantees. Even before the recession, when those of us that graduated in 2009 were still in high school, wages were beginning to shrink. Between 2002 and 2007, the inflation-adjusted wages of college graduates were down 4.5% for men and 4.8% for women.

As an alternative to accepting lower paying jobs, some graduates opted to stay in school. According to the Council of Graduate Schools, graduate school applications increased 7%. Economists predict that those that stay out of the job market would not suffer the same wage loss. But I have to ask if the opportunity cost of attending school would actually decrease overall lifetime earnings? Particularly if the economy doesn't bounce back quickly?

Graduates, what were your experiences? Do you have any tips for December or May graduates?
Fellow grad students, are you in school as a way to avoid the job market or do you just love learning as much as I do?
Undergrads and future graduates, how is your job search coming along? Is it better for business grads or are the statistics still trickling through the business markets?

(Football, in other countries, is played by eleven players with one black-and-white round ball in a huge grass-y field.) Last Sunday after a long study, I went to a friend's apartment to watch Patriot vs. Colts. Only the apartment owner understood football. I can't remember how many times he needed to explain the rules to whoever came later. We called in pizza and beers. (Anyway, beer and tomato juice are good for those who don't like the taste of beer--tips from Japanese friends.) Later, screams and yells came out from the living room. (But I don't think the neighbors were concerned, since we heard screams from other units too.) Apparently Colts didn't start well, but later turned out to "miraculously" won. The whole room applauded and sang whatever languages they could. It was a very fun night even for someone who did not usually watch sports like me. Go Colts!

It would only be appropriate to introduce myself before writing my first blog...

So, my name is Jim Plew and I am a first year undergraduate student at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. My intended major is finance with a minor in economics. I live on campus in a dorm not much larger than a janitor's closet; most of my meals consist of processed, microwaveable snacks; I watch Jeopardy every night and spend 90% of my time awake at class, doing homework, or studying... And I love every minute of it.

I'd like to think that, at first glance, I don't come across as a nerd. However, I certainly am and thus have a very strong passion for education. And, without a doubt, I have to say that I have learned more practical lessons in my first three months of college than in my entire life until this point. This is not to say that I've learned more... simply that I've learned how to survive real expectations. If you're following my thinking, you might be wondering what, specifically, I've learned here at Kelley.

To be concise, I've learned that:

- There are not enough hours in a single day to accomplish everything you would like to have completed. To cope with this, I use a myriad of post-it notes on my desk. This way, I get to cross off important assignments and feel at least one step further toward success... at least for the time being.

- You only need enough room to sit, sleep, eat, and do push-ups/sit-ups to survive while living on campus. In fact, I have found that I enjoy having a limited amount of space as it serves as an incentive to be resourceful and proactive.

- Actively listening to lectures and class discussions may be the most effective way to do well in a course and remember the material. Taking notes is a great way to keep a thorough record of said material, but you just won't get it if you don't truly consider the meaning behind all the information.

- Have confidence. I know many bright and completely capable people who second guess themselves too often. If you think you know the material, you probably do. Granted, you should first review and study extensively before an exam, but believing that you will get an A is a powerful psychological factor in succeeding that most people don't even recognize.

- Be passionate and get involved. Love what you do and what you're studying. If you don't, you shouldn't be doing it. Once you find what you're good at and what makes you happy, pursue it and get involved in similar activities and organizations. This, I believe, is the sole reason for my success thus far at Kelley... Simply put, I am inexorably pleased with my life at this point and the direction in which I'm going. Because of this mentality, I have been able to set and achieve even the most difficult goals.

Needless to say, I have learned much more than what I've included in this blog. Maybe, in the near future, I'll add to this list. Until then, I have plenty on my mind and look forward to blogging about it soon. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions. Be sure to follow me every week for more blogs about life at IUPUI and the Kelley School of Business!

Hey!

Today is the last day of my IUPUI career that I will be scheduling classes. Onestart will once again assist me in scheduling classes with ease. My dad always talked about the lines he used to wait in to schedule his classes in college to which I say thank goodness we have onestart.

My shopping cart is full and I am about ready to go in and confirm all the classes. Next semester should not be too tough. I have one last accounting class to take care of, a humanities elective for general ed, then 6 other electives in order to fulfill my 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA exam. I am really looking forward to taking some relaxing classes and having a semester where my head does not feel like it is spinning at all times. I will, however, be studying for the CPA exam, so that will keep me busy. But it should be a great semester.

It seems that this time of year, specifically 10 days from now, we each take inventory of all the things in our life. We make a list of the things that we are thankful for, make time for the important things like family, etc. Well, why do we wait for the holidays to incorporate these things into our daily lives?

Below is a project that I have been working on. A few friends on facebook are challenging themselves to name one thing they are thankful for each day, rather than just on Thanksgiving.

11/13/2009
Today I am thankful for the little gifts nature brings. Looked up this morning to a gorgeous sky filled with stars and it brightened my day.

11/14/2009
Today I am thankful for brotherhood. Today is initiation for the Kappa Sigma chapter of Delta Sigma Pi. My involvement with this fraternity has impacted my life in so many positive ways. An example? I am madly in love with my "little brother". But even more than that, I have grown professionally. I have developed my public speaking skills, my time management skills, my conflict resolution skills and more. Today will be a day of celebration, italian food and turtles. For the brothers I will share the day with, I am thankful.

11/15/2009
Today I am thankful for Iazy Sundays. Although I had meetings from noon til four today, I have spent the last several hours laying around with Tyler, visiting Target, eating pizza and watching football. It is nice to be with someone that I can just... be with. :o)

11/16/2009
Today I am thankful that my family lives a mere 2 miles away. I just got home from a tasty dinner (salmon patties, fried potatoes and cream style corn) which I helped my mom cook. We then sat down with my Dad, my two sisters and one of my brothers and had a good ole time. (My other brother is currently serving in Iraq, but he will be home soon!!!)

What are you thankful for?
I am new to this, so I am going to start by introducing myself. I am originally from Vilnius, Lithuania (Eastern Europe). I came to United States six years ago, ended up finishing up high school here, and now finishing up my senior year at IUPUI. Schooling in my country is very difficult, but it definitely came to my advantage. Since I started learning English in second though twelfth grade, I am fluent in it now. I am glad I ended up in United States, although it was very hard to leave my country, my friends and relatives there. Indiana seems very simple and people here are nice.

My original dream is to move to NYC one day, but I probably will move to Chicago first. I am a city girl, always have been and always will be. I love people, attractions, different places to visit and the nightlife in the city.
The reason I am attending IUPUI is because it is located downtown Indianapolis, which gives every student an opportunity to get to know the city better and establish contacts with the professionals while still in school. Me and my other friends have at least had one internship with companies around the downtown area and are planning on continuing to network more within the city.

It is a great opportunity for a student like us to be a part of IUPUI, because it has great professors who are willing to help whenever needed and other staff that is there to help with resume building and future plans. I would like to encourage all the students take all the advantage of the help that Kelley has for every one of us.
Although IUPUI is different from IU or PU, it has its own advantages that we need to value. I guess I could say that I am proud to be an IUPUI Jaguar!

So last Friday night, I went to a euchre/poker tournament at DOZ, the accounting firm I will be working at in the spring. This is the third straight year they have done this and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It is open for you to bring your friends and family, but I decided to just go at it on my own, and play some texas hold'em poker.

When I first arrived, I was a bit nervous. This is the first time I had ever participated in a social environment with professional co-workers. I was not sure what to expect and was bit afraid of what it would be like. But as soon as I walked through the door, I realized how laid back of an atmosphere this would be. I was so happy that I wasn't underdressed or anything like that.

I can honestly say that I had a good time, but still used it as a bit of a networking tool. I made sure to realize that I was probably always being watched by someone. I wanted to make sure that I always treated everyone there with respect and carried myself with a professional manner, even though it was a casual event. That is my advice to everyone else. If it is a casual event with a company you want to work for, or will be working for, keep in your mind that you are always being watched and that there is probably someone who is interested in how you are acting.

A few days ago, I trudged into the Kelley office after work/before class to turn in my paperwork for blogging. To my surprise, Laura Owens handed me a large white envelope. I looked at the envelope, looked at her and looked back at the envelope. "Is this my degree?!", I asked. And it was. I technically graduated in May, but had to finish an incomplete over the summer, so I had completely forgotten how excited I was that I had finally graduated. The excitement and sense of accomplishment had faded after nearly 6 months of working my day job and going to grad school at night. Oddly enough, being handed a very expensive piece of paper renewed my spirit and made my day.

For introductions purposes, I suppose you've already guessed that I am an alumni and a graduate student. I graduated with three concentrations: accounting, finance and marketing. What can I say? I have diversified interests. I am currently working in the internal audit department at Indiana PERF (Public Employees Retirement Fund). I am pursuing my Masters of Accounting and hope to graduate by December 2010 or May 2011. My primary interest is in audit, but my parents have a tax business so I am familiar with tax and would like to learn more.

Enough of that boring stuff. Who am I outside of school and work? I am a girl (or a woman, I guess) that cherishes family. I am the oldest of five kids and have close relationships with my immediate and extended family. I am the girlfriend of an amazing boy (or man, I suppose). I am random in my interests, but like to categorize and organize the most insignificant things. I enjoy the little things. I am a Hoosier tried and true. I am a fan of Indiana sports and anything live: music, plays, etc. I am a gamer, although by games I mean Scrabble, Monopoly and Cafe World. Yes, I am ashamed to admit that I finally joined the world of online Facebook games.

As an undergraduate student, I was highly involved in Kelley. I was an executive member of KSBISG (Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Student Government) and am currently an VP in the Kappa Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, a co-ed business fraternity. I am also a member of a newly revived graduate organization, GASB (Graduate Accounting Student Board). This week, we are hosting an event and enticing you all to come with FREE PIZZA.

Date: Wednesday, November 18th
Time: 5pm-6pm
Place: BS4032D
Open to all MSA and MST students

Join us on Wednesday, November 18th for a slice of pizza before class and meet the members of GASB! This is a great opportunity for you to get involved! Please RSVP to Nan Schulze at nvfische@umail.iu.edu by Monday November 16th.

Well, dear readers, it is time for kickoff and I must leave you now for the biggest game of the season. Canada indicate
that this year's peak activity should occur on the night of Nov. 17-18.
They cite 4:00 GMT on Nov. 18, which corresponds to 11 p.m. EST and 8

Just wanted to share an update about our Conference Tournament. We ended up losing to Western Illinois 1-0 in a very hard fought game. We definitely had our chances to score, but could not find a way to break through. Western Illinois was a tough team who now plays UMKC today in the tournament finals.

So now my soccer career is over. Crazy to think something you have done your entire life is no longer there but it is one more step to life in the "Real World". I will continue to play but do not think it will ever compare to the competitiveness of College Soccer. I will miss the game quite a bit but, more so, I will miss the guys on the team. It was a great run. I really enjoyed my soccer career here at IUPUI. Now it is time to focus on finishing up school!

Despite the title of this blog, I have no problem with the current weather patterns the lovely state of Indiana is experiencing. But, with this type of weather, several caveats come to mind.

First, as I mentioned in a previous blog, the snow is coming. Maybe not this month, but, like last year, there will be some snow. Maybe even more than "some," which worries me. Last year, it took one of my friends (who lives 20 minutes away) 4 hours to get home the first day it snowed. With all the downtown traffic added to the IUPUI campus traffic, the drive home for commuters will be very messy. I know there isn't much that we, as students, can do about the traffic. I just urge each of the drivers to drive safely in order to not impede traffic further with an accident.

Second, if you live in the campus apartments, there were several incidents last year. The pipes froze and burst in several buildings. Please mind the temperatures. Especially the apartment temperatures in Finney and Warthin houses.

Third, I know everyone already hears about the swine flu, but personally, I don't want to get sick. The teachers already have plans made if H1N1 becomes prominent on campus; if you get sick, stay home. The teachers really don't want to get sick either, so they will help you with getting homework done and rescheduling tests.

Last but not least, please donate some non-perishables to the boxes in the Kelley School of Business office on the third floor of the Kelley building. It's super close to Thanksgiving. Everyone deserves a Thanksgiving, so help out with the food drive.
So, why is experiential learning so important? Let's start off with the simple fact that companies want students to have work experience before they hire them. I learned this during a panel discuss in Business X320. The panel made it clear how important it was to take advantage of learning opportunities where you can actually interact with businesses. I took X320 concurrent with ICORE, and one student asked whether it was okay to put the learning experience from the ICORE project on their resume. The answer was yes, because experiential learning sets a great foundation to learn how groups actually function in actual organizations. The one stipulation for recognizing you experiential learning experience on your resume--you should actually participate in the project.

This type of learning requires that the individual take initiative and be proactive in getting the most out of the experience. We have all heard the saying, "You get out of it what you put in." This is the way I look at experiential learning.

Lastly, I want to mention how important this type of learning is for students that are going to graduate school. Over the past week, I began looking at applications to graduate school through Kelley. The one application I have gotten around to writing weighs heavily on actual work experience. Sure, the essay requires you to mention your goals and how the program will assist you in reaching those goals. But the departmental questions weighed heavily on the type of interaction I have had with professional organizations, relevant work experience, and leadership experiences gained through my experiential learning.

I guess I just want to stress the importance of being proactive and taking advantage of your learning experience at Kelley.

So the exam went fine. It wasn't great, but I was on average (or above.) This experience taught me to manage my time, and more important, to be responsible to my study. So this week I stuffed assignments and projects to my planner and set a camp at library and IT building (which open 24/7!)

Thursday
....supposed to be relaxing day for me since I only have 1 class from 3 - 4:15pm. However I woke up at 8am, cooked (I mean really "cook" with pan and oil), check email, Facebook and stuff, then left for school at 10am. The reference desk staff nodded to me when I stepped in like we're close friends just because he saw me on daily basis in the library. Was doing an accounting project that without much progress while waiting for a group meeting. 1:30pm-2:45pm, meeting with my marketing team. We had a marketing project that designs a marketing campaign for a non-profit organization for children. Everyone was prepared and contributed some idea. The meeting was really productive. 4:30 after class went back home for some more assignments.

Friday
The first day of my weekend! Met my accounting teammate at 12pm, doing homework until6pm, then headed to Campus Center for a beutiful college life ^^ My friends were the administratives for Chinese Culture Club and they had this Karaoke Night, so I needed to show my support. The attendants were shy, but I heard people went crazy after awhile and they had a good time. Only stayed for half an hour though, went back to library to finish my part of assignment. 9pm, rushed to grocery for the coming week.

Saturday
A best friend of mine was free this weekend, so I went to her place and learned to make cheesecake. Her apartment is near the canal, so we took a walk along canal and fed the ducks with bread. The weather was soooo amazing this week! 6pm, a few friends came over after their basketball practice to try the cheesecake. I can say it was very succesful!! However, I came home feeling non-productive.

Sunday
2pm now....been staying here at IT building since 12:30pm. Around 20 people are staying here to study. I guess I will need to start too.
Some of my project teams wanted to finish the project before Thanksgiving break, so we can relax on the holiday and have more time for other finals after the break. Believe you too have plan for the holiday. Start planning and finishing your work before the break!

This is my regular weekend, how is yours?

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to use this blog to say how happy I have been with the Career Planning Office this past semester. Searching for jobs is not easy. And, as every single person knows, the tough economic times make it even more tough to find a good job. In saying that, the CPO has done an excellent job to bring employers in and allow us access to companies we may otherwise not speak with. The recruiting events have all been wonderful as well. The additional services the CPO provides, mock interviews and resume reviews, are very helpful in making the Kelley Students attractive prospects.

If nothing else, I would just like to say thank you to the CPO for helping me find a job. And any student out there wondering "how in the world will I ever find a place to work" stop by the Career Planning Office, BS 4090, and go from there.

Hey Everyone,

I was thinking in class the other day about a couple classes that stuck out in my mind
here at the Kelley School Indianapolis.

First class that came to mind was X100. It was my first business class at the Kelley
School Indianapolis (I previously took classes at Kelley Bloomington) and it was the
start of a new journey, as cliche as it sounds. The class was a tedious class in the
sense that you had a lot of quizes to take and a group project. But I was in there with
some of the mens and womens soccer team and we made the most of it. Our project was on Finish Line, if you wanted to know.

A class I really enjoyed and one that made me really start to like accounting was
Managerial Accounting. Professor Lambert taught the class and made it very easy to
understand. The tests were tough but useful. I think accounting classes can get grueling
at times, but I was tuned in to this class the majority of the time.

ICORE, the three headed monster, was something I will never forget. The classes were fine but sitting in the same seat for an entire morning got very old very quick (maybe im not ready for a desk job). My group was great, however, and I learned some very useful things from the three professors.

Looking back, it has been a nice career here at Kelley Indianapolis. It is good to
reflect sometimes and think of all the hours you put in and all the times you said you
hated school and realize that you made it through, and you're almost done, and that you
will kind of miss it.... In saying that, I have one more semester that I am really looking forward to. Hopefully I will make some more memories and have some more time to
reflect.

John

No matter where we may try to hide, finals are still creepin'. At this time last year, I thought that finals weren't anything big, and that I'd be fine. The morning of my first final, I woke up, took a shower, got dressed, and walked out the door. I didn't bother having breakfast or trying to calm down. I got nervous right before the final, and I totally spaced half of the info I thought I had understood and memorized.

I have some tips for the freshmen for finals week:

1. If you have an early final, (I have one the week before finals start), make sure that you leave room for studying for it. Other teachers will still be cramming during that week, but organize your time to study at least 3 nights before the final. Don't cram the morning of just because you can't find time to juggle homework and review.

2. During finals week, make sure you have breakfast, or at least a light snack. If you have multiple finals during one day, be sure to take some lunch or snacks to eat between classes. I remember running around, trying to cram before tests, and thinking about how hungry I was. Keep your metabolism going and your brain working!

3. The night before a final, leave an hour to take a bath, watch a movie, or just sit and think. That way, your body can relax and your brain can wind down before you lay down to sleep, instead of keeping you awake.

4. The day of last final, DON'T just try to get it done. I did this last year because I just wanted to be on break. I have a goal this year to use up all the time on my last final, and not to just rush out early. Use up your time, check your work, and don't think about Winter Break.

If you have any more tips, please post them! Maybe that will help all the poor unfortunate souls in hard classes.
